Investing 101

Applying the “5 W’s” to investing and money. Share this with someone who might find it useful.

Why?

2 reasons: (1) beat inflation so your money doesn’t lose buying power. (2) build a solid foundation, one that gives you options and the ability to make calm and opportunistic decisions, instead of rushed decisions during emergencies.

When?

As early and as often as possible. Compound interest is slow at first, then accelerates exponentially like a hockey stick. Time is the greatest asset. See chart below.

What?

Buy stocks for the long run, with a preference for broad market ETFs over individual stock picks. Simply very hard for the average person to excel at - better off matching the market and you will be better than majority of stock pickers anyway. Real estate can also be a great asset class, but it’s more hands on and relies more heavily on leverage. If you can manage both, a little diversification in this regard is smart.

How?

Download wealthsimple, max out your tax sheltered accounts first (TFSA, RRSP, FHSA if applicable), then build up non-registered investing accounts.
